SAMUI ISLAND by Barbara Woinke For many years, Samui was largely frequented by young travelers looking for unspoiled beaches and cheap accommodation. Travel was by train or bus to Surat Thani, and then by ferry or the night boat to the pier in Nathon. From there, local song-taews were on hand to deliver people to their beach of choice, and ferries and boats connected to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.
THE PEARL OF THE SOUTHERN CHINA SEA by Lynn Grebstad Koh Samui was first inhabited over a century ago by fishermen, later by traders, appearing on Ming Dynasty maps dating back as early as 1687. In living memory, until the ‘70's Koh Samui was a remote self-sufficient community subsisting on fishing, growing rice and the export of coconuts. Today, rumours of pirates and trading boats tossed by storms are fading memories.
DON'T CALL ME NEMO! by Claudio Cerquetti The beach and the sea, still full of life as these Amphiprioninae, Latin name of Clown Fish (while "Nemo" is just a Disney character), is undoubtedly the island’s primary draw with its sun, sand...and fabulous top-quality hotels and resorts. But for the curious, Samui is also rich in natural resources, with rolling hills, streams and waterfalls, interesting rock formations, undisturbed forests, quaint temples and fishermen’s villages.
